Whales bubble net feeding
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadOnly humpback whales engage in this social foraging behavior. Not all humpback whales practice this type of group feeding. One whale in the group of whales blows a curtain of bubbles to contain schools of small fish (typically Pacific herring). The whales then rush up to the surface below the encircled fish and capture the fish in their huge mouths which can be unhinged. These whales were photographed from the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry m/v LeConte near Couverden Point while traveling from Juneau to Gustavus, Alaska in the Lynn Canal.
