The Carter Cemetery, located along one of the many trails in the Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area, has many interesting tombstones. Established in 1891, the small graveyard has 29 documented grave markers.
The cemetery is a peaceful spot to rest and to explore while hiking the approximate 18 miles of trails in the area managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. The inactive cemetery is about a half-mile walk from the nearest parking area.
The Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area’s 2,502-acre area offers hiking, horseback riding, and primitive camping opportunities. There is also an unstaffed shooting range on the area. Hunting is permitted during season.
