Pahoehoe and aa lava
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadPahoehoe lava (right) has a smooth surface where as `a`a lava has a rough surface. In an eruption where a lot of lava is being discharged at once - `a`a flows tend to form. If the rate is low, a pahoehoe flow is more likely. This example from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii shows both types of lava.
