The state flag of Alaska aboard the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry, M/V Leconte, flutters in the wind.
The design of the flag was the result of a 1927 competition to design the flag. The winner, seventh-grader Benny Benson, described his entry, “The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaska flower. The North Star is for the future of the state of Alaska, the most northerly in the Union. The dipper is for the Great Bear – symbolizing strength."
