  • Wood carver Jim Heaton works on a totem pole carving in the Dalton City area of Haines, Alaska. Heaton specializes in Northwest Coast Art and has completed over 250 feet of totem poles. Since 2001 Jim has lead the carving projects in the Village of Klukwan and has tought Northwest Coast Art, through the University of Alaska Southeast, in Juneau, Haines and Klukwan.

  • “Hugging the World”, a red cedar carving done in Northwest Coast style hangs in the domestic terminal at Vancouver International Airport, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The artwork, by Robert Davidson, has two large dance masks of an Eagle and Raven that are mounted back to back. Eagles and Ravens are important in Haida spiritual beliefs and social structure.

  • Pictured are just some of the tapestries in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles that were created by artist John Nava. The tapestries are the largest collection in a Catholic church in the United States. The cathedral was designed by Rafael Moneo in a postmodern style. The cathedral opened in 2002, replaced the Cathedral of Saint Viviana which was severely damaged in a 1994 earthquake.

  • The town of Haines, in southeast Alaska, celebrates the Fourth of July with a parade, picnic, and other activities. Among the participants in the parade is the Haines Community marching Band, a group made up of local musicians. This year, they played Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”<br />
<br />
Haines, a picturesque costal fishing community, is located on the Lynn Canal between the towns of Skagway and Juneau.

  • Ki'i (wooden images) stand guard over a reconstruction of a hawaiian temple and mausoleum of early Hawaiian royalty at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Early Hawaiians who broke a law (kapu) could avoid death by fleeing to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau where they would be absolved by a priest. Because of this, Pu'uhonua o Honaunau is sometimes referred to as the "City of Refuge."

  • One of the 15,000 petroglyphs at Pu'u Loa in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was the custom of early Hawaiians to bring the umbilical stump of a newborn to Pu'u and place it in one of the 7,000 cup-like holes carved into the lava. A circle would then be carved around a collection of holes to signify a family.

  • James Balog (center), an award winning nature and environmental photojournalist, answers questions from photojournalism students in the gallery of the Angus and Betty McDougall Center for Photojournalism Studies at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri. Balog was at the university to receive a Missouri Honor Medal In recognition of three decades of using the photographic image to help the public understand the impact of environmental change. Balog is the founder and director of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) and the Earth Vision Trust.

  • Night-time close-up view of two of the featured six astronomers that make up the Astronomers Monument at the Griffith Observatory in Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Completed in 1934, the concrete statue is a Public Works of Art Project. The six astronomers featured in the monument are: Hipparchus, Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, Isaac Newton and John Herschel.
